Turkey Time!

Well it's gettin close. That's right...It's almost Turkey season. In just a few days I will get up before daylight. I'll slip into the woods while the birds have just started to chirp. I'll ease down and old dirt road where the tall pines and the big oaks are. I'll slowly make my way to where this old creek crosses the road. About 100 yards from that creek I'll slip my hand into my turkey vest and pull out that owl hoot tube and ease it up to my mouth. With any luck ,as I blow that call about two or three times, I'll hear a big ole tom close to where I plan to set up. I'll try to get as close as I can to the wise bird and set out my decoys. As the daylight gets brighter I'll wait to see where he decides to fly down and set up shop. When that happens the fun will begin.
This may not sound like fun to you but let me say, if you've never been in the woods on a brisk cool morning with a light fog as the daylight is just breakin and then you hear the thundering of that big ole mature gobbler as he talks back to you because of a call that you make with a box call or a mouth call or a slate call, then you are missing it. I have been turkey hunting for about 5 years now. I've only killed one big long beard but have had many other chances. It's not so much about the killing that makes it,although it would be nice to take another big ole bird, but rather it's about the thrill of calling a very smart bird close enough to even have the oppurtunity. I actually enjoy calling for others more than for myself. It's the fellowship and the time spent in the woods with great friends that I look forward too. I don't know how anyone can say it's stupid or boring other than they probably have never been before and are just talking out of ignorance. I love just being out in the middle of Gods creation and listening to the choir of the woods as they welcome in another day.
Well enough said! Let's take it to the woods. Good luck to all of you who plan on giving it a shot. Remember that all hunts are a win if you're able to just go.
